If so, you’re not alone. Here’s a fascinating story which explains why you (and so many people) self-sabotage happiness…

A research study was done on goldfish, who were raised in an aquarium with a pesky glass wall smack down its middle. Every time these goldfish tried to swim to the far side of the aquarium – ouch – they hit their little fish noses on the glass wall.  Eventually the goldfish became resigned to their limited swimming options, and stayed swooshing around in the mere half-sized portion of the aquarium - which they now recognized as home.

After a few months, the researchers removed the glass wall – allowing the goldfish to swim wherever their little gills could gather speed to take them.

Guess What?

The goldfish never tried to swim to the other side of the aquarium.


Although these goldfish were no longer stopped by that glass wall – they were stopped by their limiting beliefs.

These goldfish became prisoners of their past life conditioning.

We humans are no better.

Over time we amass limiting beliefs about how life supposedly is – limiting beliefs which are not valid. We then allow these limiting beliefs to stop us from living our happiest life.

Basically: Our beliefs create our life results. 

Martin Seligman (a renowned Positive Psychologist) calls these limiting beliefs: “learned helplessness.” 

Here's a quick way to tell if you have glass wall beliefs - and where exactly you have them...

Look at your Major Life Categories ( aka: love, career, money, friendship, health etc). Next, rate yourself on a Happiness Score of 1 to 10. Whenever a Life Category garners a Happiness Score of 7 or under, chances are your subconscious mind is blocking you with a glass wall belief, telling you things like…

– go no further!”


“Yo! Money Happiness stops HERE

    I came to Karen because I felt I give too much and get taken advantage of - both in personal and professional relationships. I desired more balance in the "give and take" and also wanted to be more assertive. I found out that I had 2 issues. Firstly, with what Karen calls “pendulum swings” (I wouldn't speak up at all - or I'd speak up too strongly). And "pain softeners" (I’d tell myself “this is OK - it's not so bad” - when my life could be much better. )

    I initially came to Karen as I was interested in exploring my relationship with food. In many ways I am one of the lucky ones, I can eat pretty much what i like without too many dire consequences - but that was allowing me to just cover up the fact that I was still falling into the same unhealthy traps and i wanted to find out why. While working with Karen, I was shocked by how much came to surface as to why I had developed food issues. I believe people self-sabotage their happiness because they're blocked by what I call the 3 C's


If one (or all) of the 3 C’s has been blocking you from happiness, it’s NOT your fault. These C’s are tough to see. Hence you have BLINDSPOTS! Plus, these 3 C’s are challenging to get through – especially if your BLINDSPOTS stop you from fully understanding them.

These 3 C’s create something called
“Masochistic Equilibrium”!


If you’re experiencing repeated challenges, chances are it’s because you’ve created a “Comfort Zone” based in “Discomfort.” One of those 3 C’s (or more) has persuaded you that life is painful. For example, perhaps you now believe that life is 70% pain, and only 30% happiness. As a result, if you ever manage to create a life of 97% happiness, only 3% pain -- you will start to feel twitchy. Your subconscious will then step in and self-sabotage – bringing your happiness level back down, down, down to your familiar “Comfort Zone” – or rather your familiar “Discomfort Zone” – your “Masochistic Equilibrium.” Or you will simply set up a life from the get-go which is stuck at “70% pain, and only 30% happiness.”
