The Big Chill (Who Turned Up the Cold in Here?)

“The Abominable Snowman,” by Valerie Sussman

The ambient temperature in my marriage

gradually went from hot

to warm

to lukewarm

to cool

to cold

to freezing.

I went from hand-picked

to nit-picked

to ice-picked.

From attraction

to coming un-attraction

to fatal unattraction.

I did not see it coming;

my basic instincts failed me

as I found myself left out in the cold.

(Brrr…)

ABOUT THE WRITER AND ARTIST: Dr. Valerie Sussman is a writer and healing artist. She’s presently working on a book called, “Diary of An Ex-Mad, Ex-Desperate, Ex-House-Wife.”  She’s a formerly-practicing Pediatrician who’s now getting known for making quirky, offbeat art in order to explore life’s challenges and conundrums. Her back story:  At the age of 50 she found herself facing the “Triple Threat.” Unfortunately, this did not include Singing, Dancing, and Acting—but the other (perhaps more common) “Triple Threat”: Midlife, Menopause, and … Divorce.  As a result, she began maniacally creating somewhat wacky pieces of art as a means of expressing her pain, fear, anger… and, yes, hope. She thus became a Healing Artist. You can find her at instagram.com/whybebeige

“The Abominable Snowman”: figurine from The Rudolph Company, Swarovski crystal snowflake, ice chest, ice pick, ice cubes, and thermometer, various dollhouse miniatures, miniature heart bead, pom poms, artificial snow and lots of resin.
